What lives on your device

Your selected visa category (and, optionally, your program stage) is saved in your browser's localStorage, under the key compass:profile. That's it — no account, no sign-in, no identifying information attached to it. It never leaves your browser except as part of the questions you actively choose to ask. "Switch category" clears it instantly; clearing your browser storage clears it too.

What happens when you ask a question

Your question (or pasted document text) is sent to Compass's server, which sends it to an AI model provider (via OpenRouter) to generate a response, and — for questions about rules — fetches the relevant official government page live. None of this is saved as a conversation history or tied to you individually. Compass itself doesn't log your questions or answers anywhere persistent; the model provider processes the request under its own standard API data-handling terms, the same as any AI API call.

What Compass does store, and why

• Cached page content — the text of official government pages Compass has fetched, cached for 12 hours so repeated questions don't re-fetch unnecessarily. This is public government text, not anything about you.
• Freshness snapshots — the same kind of cached government page text, kept longer so the Freshness-Watch agent can detect real changes over time. Also not about you.
• Rate-limit counters — your IP address is used to count requests per day (to prevent abuse), stored for 24 hours, then automatically expired. This is the one thing here that's technically about you, and it's deliberately short-lived and used for nothing beyond that count.

What Compass never does

No accounts, no sign-in, no analytics or tracking scripts, no selling or sharing of any data, no server-side database mapping a person to their immigration status or category. If you paste a document, that text is used only to answer your question in that moment — it isn't stored, and Compass doesn't build a profile from it.
