Every question runs a real multi-step search: the agent decides which official sources actually cover it, fetches them live (checking a 12-hour cache first), and only then writes an answer — grounded strictly in what those pages actually say this run. It never answers from its own training memory, and it explicitly lists what it couldn't verify rather than filling a gap with a guess. A few specific topics — the J-1 two-year home-residency rule, the UK's Genuine Student requirement, Japan's Minister-of-Justice discretion doctrine, France's genuine-study requirement, South Korea's visa-cancellation discretion clause, Spain's consular-interview discretion practice, Italy's judicial-review-standard doctrine, and several more across the other countries Compass covers — are hard-coded to always redirect to the official source directly, because no single fetchable page can give a full, safe answer, and a partial one there is genuinely dangerous.

Every source is checked for real rule changes, not just a date stamp.

Compass keeps a snapshot of each official source it relies on. On every check, it compares the current page against that snapshot and — if anything differs — asks a model to judge whether the change is substantive (an actual rule, timeframe, or requirement) or trivial (a wording tweak, a date-stamp bump). Only substantive changes get surfaced. It also tracks which other pages depend on a given source, so a change to the OPT page flags the STEM OPT and travel pages for re-review too.

Given your program end date (and OPT start date, if relevant), this agent computes every date that follows from official timeframes — deterministically, the same way every time, never an LLM's arithmetic. But it doesn't just trust its own constants: before showing you a date, it fetches the live source behind that timeframe and asks a model whether the source still agrees with the number baked into the app. If it disagrees, you see that flagged, not a silently wrong date.

The exact fields depend on your country's real document set — an I-20 for the US, a CAS letter for the UK, a Study Permit for Canada, a Certificate of Eligibility for Japan, a VLS-TS for France, and so on across all 15 countries Compass covers. Every field can come back null, and null is treated as the correct answer when something isn't clearly stated, not a failure. If a usable date comes through, it feeds straight into the same deadline engine as Agent 3, so you get your actual timeline from your actual document.

It's deliberately conservative about escalating to "you need a lawyer" — reserved for things with real legal consequence already in motion, not every unfamiliar process question.
